What is the “titulín” and which boats can you operate?#
“Titulín” is the popular name still used for Spain's Licencia de Navegación, its most basic recreational boating qualification.
Under Royal Decree 875/2014 in Spain's Official State Gazette, the licence allows you to:
- Operate recreational boats up to 6 metres in length
- Use engine power appropriate for the boat according to its manufacturer
- Operate personal watercraft within their specific limits
- Navigate during daylight hours only
- Travel no more than 2 nautical miles in any direction from a port, marina or place of shelter
You must carry the licence on board. Holding it does not mean that you may rent any boat or follow any route. The boat, navigation area and rental conditions must all fall within its permissions.
Can you rent a boat with a “titulín” in Mallorca?#

Route ideas for holders of Spain's basic boat licence#
With a Licencia de Navegación, a route should not be chosen simply because a cove looks close on a map. The 2-nautical-mile limit is measured from a port, marina or place of shelter, and the departure base determines the whole plan.
Responsible planning should prioritise:
- A short coastal route approved by the rental company
- Clearly identified places of shelter throughout the trip
- Enough time to return before wind or swell conditions change
- Nearby alternatives if a cove is busy or conditions worsen
- Daylight navigation only
The company handing over the boat should explain the permitted area and the restrictions for that day. If you do not know Palma Bay well, improvising a route is not advisable.
With a professional skipper, the plan is different. Departing from Palma, stops may include areas such as Illetes, Cala Comtessa, Portals Vells or Cala Blava, always depending on current sea conditions, trip duration and the skipper's safety judgement.
